The Old School on Ballycastle's Main Street in 2023

Continuing on from the success of The Ballinglen Museum of Art, our focus going forward is going to be the renovation of our recently purchased space - ’The Old School’. The intention is to renovate ‘The Old School’ so it becomes a state of the art education centre for workshops and our education programme for children/young people.

Before The Ballinglen Arts Foundation was built, our founders - Margo and Peter - utilised ‘The Old School’ to use as studios while The Arts Foundation was under construction. Prior to this, ‘The Old School’ was the local all-girls National School. Two of our very own members of staff attended! We’re delighted to tell you that we have secured the planning permission needed from Mayo County Council to move forward with the renovation.  This building is so important to The Foundation- it will enable us to expand upon our workshop programme, integral to the running of Ballinglen. The workshops enable us to continue to support artists through our residency award, help support our outreach programmes for children, young people and adults, and allow us to continue to serve our rural community through creative engagement. Most importantly this building will allow us to return the Foundation back to its original quiet, peaceful space for artists on residency.
