A Response to Place
Workshop with Bonnie Levinthal
This workshop will explore the creation of art in response to the context of 'place'.
The workshop is open to artists at all levels of experience. Students will explore various print processes such as drypoint, monoprint, and the art of suminagashi (ink floating on water). Emphasis will be on observations and response to the Irish landscape around Ballycastle.
The area around Ballinglen is steeped in history and natural beauty. We will explore the local area and visit places such as the prehistoric Céide Fields and Down Patrick where students will record their impressions of the landscape. Back in the studio participants will utilize various print processes investigating the context of place as it applies to contemporary art making practices and to further develop their own personal artwork.
Visual presentations and demonstrations will enhance the learning experience, illustrate examples and introduce students to contemporary and historical artists.
Ballinglen offers full access to a well-lit studio with individual workspaces, a printmaking studio, an extensive art library, the Ballinglen Art Gallery and Ballinglen Museum of Art where participants can view curated exhibitions of original artwork and have access to the permanent collection.
This workshop is being taught by Bonnie Levinthal, a former Professor of Art at Penn State University, and resident fellow at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation.
