My stay at Ballinglen was pure adventure – physical, emotional, spiritual, creative. I loved the astonishing vistas from remote cliffs hundreds of feet above the ocean and the solitude of walking miles along peat bogs, never seeing a soul. It seemed I could easily stumble into a backyard or scale a hilltop or step into a patch of churning earth that was a stone burial ground stretching back eons. Memento mori were everywhere. And the residency shook me out of my comfort zone – I was forced to find subject matter away from my long-term project, my home. And in doing so I cultivated a new home in a far corner of the world, making new friends that helped me see a bigger picture. - Charles Ritchie
