My three visits to Ballinglen have provided quiet time to think, work, and read, away from the demands of every-day life. Also important is the clarity and particularity of the North Mayo landscape. My work has been inspired by place for many decades, each of them with its unique properties. Surrounding Ballinglen, the power and history of dramatic rock formations sets a challenging contrast, for example, to delicate, newly emerging foliage, offering a brilliant range of visual opportunities to be pursued. The gracious and helpful Ballinglen staff, artists living in the town, fellows from around the world, and welcoming local shopkeepers add daily to the pleasurable experience of being a fellow. - Ruth Fine
